OK, we know what the Paul means by running the race, it is sharing and proclaiming the Gospel. So what is the difference between running the race and training to run the race? Aren't we sharing the Gospel just living? Everyday we are a light for the Gospel to those around us. Matthew 5:14 "You are the light of the world" That light is not something we manufacture, but the light of Christ dwelling in us (Romans 8:9). So everyday living (shopping, driving, etc.) we share the Gospel whether we know it or not.
As Christians, we should not be satisfied with haphazard sharing (1 Corinthians 9:26). When we commit to training (spiritual discipline, small group, etc) and an intentionally exercise of our gifts to share the Gospel (the Race), that is when we have the greatest opportunity to witness the power of Christ bringing the spiritual dead to life. What race are you preparing to run? Maybe it is the holiday meal with unbelieving family members. Maybe it is preparing to live on one income so your spouse can be home. What race are you training to run?
